Burial Exercise
Today we’re going to do something. We are going to bury the old and create something new. Isn’t it about time that you stop tricking your mind into believing you’re someone that you’re not? We’ve all created stories about ourselves at some point or another. From this point moving forward, you will no longer live the lies that you and others have convinced you of. I proclaim that part of your life over. It’s time to BURY the old identity that’s held you back for years. Something important to remember: the more you give in this exercise, the more you get so go all in!
The “I Am Not Athletic” Story
What do I mean? For most of my life, I believed I was not athletic or good at sports; honestly, I dreaded gym class. It wasn’t until after college that I began to get into running; it was more or less a way for me to blow off steam productively. Although I could run and played in a recreational beach volleyball league for years, I didn’t consider myself athletic.
My mindset started to shift when I met my husband who happens to be a personal trainer. I started weight lifting and HIIT training (in addition to running) with him and I noticed a change in both my endurance, stamina, and strength. Soon I realized that I could be strong, fast, and athletic. Changing my mindset moved me so much that I went from working in the education realm to the fitness industry. I am been happier, stronger, faster, and the most athletic I’ve ever been in my entire life. In fact, this morning I ran two and a half miles in 22:07, which is almost a full minute faster now (three months postpartum) than I was before I became pregnant with my son last spring. I buried the old beliefs about myself and now it’s time for you to bury the old about yourself.
Out with the Old
Grab a piece of paper and something to write with. Give the identity that’s held you back for years (the person who believes the negative things about you) a name and write it at the top of the paper; for example, Debbie Downer, Little Susie, Soft Sam. After you’ve done that, then answer the following questions.
- What are the qualities of this part of yourself? What does he/she tell you about yourself?
- What is he/she afraid to do?
- What do you get out of maintaining these beliefs about yourself?
- What do you really know about you?
- What are some of the negative identities that you have taken on because of XYZ experience? Share the experience and the negative identities.
- What is your true identity?
In With The New
The persistent voice that tells you that you are not good enough, unlovable, not attractive enough, or worthy is a lie straight from hell. It will hold you hostage if you let it so as soon as it shows up, you must face it head on and tell yourself the truth. You must proclaim power over it and tell that evil spirit– “This is not who I am! I am lovable! I am valuable! I am beautiful! I am powerful! I am enough!”
Time to bury the old negative thoughts so the new positive ideas can move in. Now that you know that that voice is not you, you can invite him/her to stay away from your positive thoughts. Fill in the blank with the name that you gave to your negative voice and say this statement out loud, in front of the mirror, with all your might:
“YOU, ____________ HAVE NO PLACE IN MY LIFE ANYMORE! YOU ARE NOT WELCOME HERE! GET OUT AND DON’T YOU THINK ABOUT COMING BACK! YOU’RE NOT WANTED IN THIS BEAUTIFUL MIND OF MINE! THIS IS A PLACE OF LOVE, EMPATHY, AND KINDNESS TO THOSE AROUND ME INCLUDING MYSELF! IF YOU SHOW UP, I WILL KICK YOU OUT! I KNOW WHO I AM AND IT’S NOT THE GARBAGE YOU FEED ME! LEAVE! NOW! I AM LOVEABLE! I AM VALUABLE! I AM BEAUTIFUL! I AM POWERFUL! I AM ENOUGH!”
